As Toyota races to repair hundreds of thousands of recalled vehicles for problems including gas pedals, floor mats and brakes, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration(NHTSA) is taking heat for not catching the problem sooner and/or looking the other way and Honda is expanding its own safety-related recall. 

-The former head of NHTSA criticized the organization's investigation into Toyota.  

-On February 16, 2010, NHTSA began a probe investigating Toyota's timeliness in issuing the recall.

-The New York Times has reported that "not once in more than six years of reviews of Toyota's problems did officials at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which regulates automakers, use their power to subpoena Toyota's records, even though they said they believed the automaker was withholding critical information."   

-US Congressional hearings have been scheduled to further investigate the handling of the Toyota recall situation.  

-Honda too has been affected by damaging recalls, expanding their airbag recall to include nearly one million 2001 and 2002 Accord, Civic, Odyssey minivan, CR-V vehicles and 2002 Acura TL sedans.   

-As this issue gets more media attention, we expect Toyota and Honda owners who have been in accidents over the past several years to wonder whether their accident was caused by one of these vehicle defects.
